The Art of Housekeeping by Housewife Bliss

Today our dear Coryann from Housewife Bliss is taking precious time away from her adorable family and the hectic preparations for an overseas move to enlighten us about the Art of Home keeping. I have learned so much from this housewife and her fantastic blog. With grace, wit and just a hint of madness she shares very precise views on how a household should be run. I must admit that I often feel pretty darned inadequate after reading some of her hilariously idyllic antics.  Today, upon my request, she is touching the subject of housekeeping in the Arts.  Coryann writes this fabulous series on the place of the housewife in History and has dug up some interesting trivia for us here...

Thank you ever so much for asking me to grace your pages with my thoughts on nesting and the art of keeping home. Design plays an important part in enjoying your nest, and equally important are more traditional avenues that make your house a home.

The fine art of nesting has captivated artists, writers, poets and screen players for centuries. The haven women create in their home nurtures the soul, fuels the spirit and warms the heart, after all Dorothy said it best when she said, ‘there is no place like home’.

The way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach. Homemade meals made with love was best brought to light in Like Water for Chocolate; perhaps not the nesting literature for G rated audiences, but it reminds the cook in us all to take time to prepare a meal with love and devotion.

Some of my favourite memories of childhood are in the kitchen cooking with my mother

…and then enjoying the fruits of our labours in a family dinner.

Dolly Parton said it best when she sang about the coat of many colours her mama made.

There is something compulsive in me that drives me to buy ribbons, wool and haberdashery materials. Homemade treasures are the delights of the heart; you can feel the love in each stitch.

A clean home breathes fresh life into your home. It is amazing how enjoyable your home is when the laundry is folded, the beds are made and the dishes are done. As the proverb goes, "She looks well to the ways of her household, and eats not the bread of idleness."

The art of housekeeping was perfectly captured in the domestic endearments of Jayne Eyre.

The best way to enjoy your home is by entertaining. Celebrating special occasions and seasonal delights with your friends and family imprints memories into your walls and gives your home a luster that can only be found by creating memories.

Stanley Banks knows this truth all to well; his home was privy to an amazing celebration, captured beautifully in Father of the Bride.

The garden is the room often overlooked in a home. It should be cared for, loved and lived in just as much as any room in your home. The ladies of Sense and Sensibility captured the idea making use of outside spaces.

While not the traditional image of a woman enjoying her garden, this shows that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, just as your garden should be.

What a clever and true post. Homekeeping and nesting is really one of the most basic needs we have. It encompasses safety, food, shelter, clothing, love and life! Pretty hedy job... that we do as if it is second nature!

Yvonne is right about this, it's
2nd nature to a lot of us. Even visiting with daughter it seems the mothering instincts return, as if I must provide for her (& she's in her OWN home). If a girl has the luxury to actually stay-at-home, be happy, enjoy every minute,
and don't think you're wasting time just because you're doing something creative. xx's

What a lovely post to end the week on and such inspiration for the weekend. I'm going to garden and cook a meal for my family but I'll leave the sewing to the pros (a.k.a. Valentino!)
Happy Mother's Day, Catherine!

I absolutely agree that there's nothing better than a clean home, a freshly made bed...they quiet the mind after a long day.

I love the honest sentiment behind this post. It is the things we do for our family that mean the most and make the greatest impression. I think I have a book called the art of keeping a home, or something like that. I have to find it, and I'll let you know. Happy Mother's Day Coryann and Catherine!
